Communities Explored

Communities Explored is a hands on learning programme engages with local residents to help them to understand what makes their community tick. It gives people the skills and networks to enable them to make positive changes and participate more effectively within a local community.

It has linked service providers, the public sector and hard to reach communities to facilitate dialogue and change.

It has taken local residents to other inspiring communities where they can find out how grassroots community regeneration can made a real difference and it has taken people to 10 Downing Street to speak to the prime minister!

The programme is delivered in a relaxed and informal atmosphere using a variety of methods including guest speakers, visits, practical activities and the opportunity to question key players within the community.

The programme consists of eight programme days. Each day is built around local concerns, issues and factors that affect local communities.

Key areas covered include Crime and Policing, Money and Investment, Politics and Local Government, Health and Education and Learning.

The programme has engaged with thousands of residents from a diverse range of backgrounds, ages and experience from the Humber area.

The programme promotes active citizenship and raises resident awareness of how individuals can play a crucial role in changing their community, improve quality of life and increase access to a range of social and employment opportunities.

The programme fosters confidence, self-esteem and a “can-do” attitude within individuals and promotes the ethos and effects of positive partnership working.

People taking part in the programme have been inspired them to gain employment within the Voluntary and Community sector. Others have joined residents committees, youth justice boards, school governing bodies or become local volunteers.
