Graduates in the Community

This innovative programme was developed by CERT to tackle two long standing and widely acknowledged issues facing North East Lincolnshire. Firstly the problems of attracting and retaining graduates where traditionally young people leave the area to study and do not return.

In addition there are recurring recruitment difficulties in attracting professional staff to the area. What is commonly acknowledged is that if personnel relocate here for a sustained period, the quality of life is such that they stay in the area. The project attracted and retained such young professionals.

The second strand of the project was the development of the Social Economy in North East Lincolnshire. CERT realised that there was an untapped resource available as recent graduates had a unique skill set to offer to local organisations.

The project offered an ideal win-win solution where graduates gain 6 months employment history in a relevant area and local organisations can research and develop new products and services in order to develop the social economy.

The types of roles graduates took on included:

  • Waste Minimisation Project Development
  • Social Firms Research
  • Public Transport Initiatives
  • Credit Union Development
  • Bicycle Recycling Initiative
  • On-line Community Initiative
  • Food Co-operative
  • Renewal Energy Business Development
  • Environmental Advocacy
  • Creative Industries Research and Toolkit
  • Graduate Development Initiative

The programme enabled all but two graduates who started the programme to obtain full time employment within a relevant field of work.
